DUI possible cause of fatal car accident, police investigating

A tragic accident in Northern California has broken a family in more ways than one. A single-vehicle crash resulted in the death of a child and injuries to the child's parents. Police suspect DUI as one contributing factor in this terrible tragedy.

Police were called to the scene of an accident, in which the driver of a vehicle apparently lost control and struck a tree. A mother, father and child were in the car at the time of the crash. The child, a 12-year-old girl, was reportedly ejected from the car. She died before she could be transported for medical care. The mother, 34 years old, suffered minor injuries and has already been released from the hospital, while the father, a 42-year-old, is said to be in critical condition.

Police have indicated that they do believe alcohol use and speed contributed to this accident. However, those claims have yet to be verified. Once recovered from his injuries, it is possible that the father -- who was driving at the time of the crash -- may face charges for the incident.

This family has been through something no one wishes to experience. Losing a child is difficult to recover from. Unfortunately, criminal charges are often filed in cases such as this in California, and facing criminal charges, on top everything else, would be devastating under the circumstances. If criminal charges are filed against this father, which would likely include felony DUI and several others, he could face prison time, fines and court mandated rehabilitation. A strategic criminal defense may assist this grieving father in fighting any charges or seeking alternative sentencing, so that he can focus on his family and moving forward.
