California woman facing charges for insurance fraud

Part of vehicle ownership is obtaining proper auto insurance. It is fair to say that the majority of California residents who own and operate a car make payments on an insurance policy in order to protect themselves in the event of an accident. Unfortunately, if a time comes when there is a legitimate need to use the protections offered in that policy, any issue with the claim could result in an insurance fraud investigation.

Recently, a woman in San Diego was arrested and is facing charges for auto insurance fraud. The 30-year-old is accused of obtaining and filing an auto insurance claim after an accident occurred. It is unknown if she is being held by police or if she was able to post bail. Court dates regarding this particular case have not been reported to the public.

The accusation of fraud posed in this case is what is known as a crash and buy scheme, which is reportedly a common type of insurance fraud. In 2014, approximately 200 people across the state were arrested under similar circumstances. These claims are not taken lightly, and those arrested for this type of activity could face serious consequences should a conviction be obtained by prosecuting attorneys.

The effects of auto insurance fraud can be wide-reaching -- generally leaving other consumers left paying for these claims in the form of higher premiums. As so many are affected by this type of activity, those in California who have been accused of insurance fraud will face an uphill legal battle which, if lost, could result in incarceration and/or hefty fines, among other sanctions. As these cases are often complex, a well-planned criminal defense can help those accused pursue the best possible resolution for the criminal claims stacked against him or her.
