Domestic violence a contributing factor in rise of violent crimes

Violent crimes are an issue statewide. In one particular area of California, these types of crimes were reportedly higher in 2014 than in years previous. A number of factors reportedly contributed to this increase -- domestic violence rates being one of them.

A recent report was released regarding violent crime statistics in the Los Angeles area. According to the information provided, violent crimes increased by approximately 14 percent in 2014 compared to the numbers released for 2013. Reports of rape, domestic violence and alcohol-fueled assaults were considered to be much higher than the previous year. As a result of these findings, the Domestic Abuse Response Team program will be expanded to all police stations in the area in order to help handle these situations.

Those accused of these crimes could face a number of potential consequences under California laws. A conviction of a domestic violence charge can result in a myriad of penalties, depending on an individual's circumstances. These can include jail and/or prison time, probation, loss of parental privileges and mandatory rehabilitation.

Law enforcement officials in California do not take accusations of domestic violence lightly. Every one of these cases is unique and can have a drastic impact on the life of the accused and his or her accuser. As such, serious consideration must be given to all parties involved to ensure that each person's legal rights are being protected. Those facing accusations of acts of domestic violence will likely benefit from a strategic criminal defense. With so much to lose, these individuals deserve the best possible chance at fighting the charges against them.
