Parents of minors charged in graffiti cases liable for damages

Graffiti can be found in numerous areas around California. While the artists responsible often view this activity as a form of personal expression, property owners may feel otherwise. Graffiti is considered vandalism and can cost property owners a pretty penny to have it removed.

Juveniles are believed to be responsible for a significant amount of the graffiti found across the state. Those who are accused of this type of activity may be required to pay a considerable amount in fines as punishment for their actions. If a juvenile is indeed found liable for the vandalism, they could be responsible to pay up to $50,000 in fines to help cover the property damage.

Few teens would be able to afford the fines associated with vandalism. For those who are unable to pay these fines on their own, their parents or legal guardians can be held liable. According to state laws, parents of minors who cause property damage due to graffiti or other forms of vandalism can also be held civilly liable to cover up to $25,000 in property damages. Along with covering these fines, parents and/or guardians may also be responsible for reimbursing the City for any funds used as a reward for information that leads to the arrest of the individual responsible for the graffiti.

While graffiti can seem like such a victimless crime, the damages caused can be costly for property owners to repair. As such, the penalties associated with this type of crime are pretty significant for both any juvenile accused and their parents. These fines are certainly a large chunk of change that most California residents don't have just lying around. With the help of a criminal defense team, it may be possible to successfully fight these criminal accusations and, in turn, avoid the fines that would be associated with a conviction.
