Politician's wife cleared of drug crimes charges after rehab

A state official's wife is no longer facing drug and child endangerment charges. California state Treasurer Bill Lockyer's wife had been arrested for drug crimes including drug possession and being under the influence of drugs. She was accused of consuming methamphetamine and storing drugs in her home. Her 9-year-old son also lived in that Southern California house. Authorities arrested the woman in August 2012 after receiving a tip. The woman was living at a relative's home. Officers said they found drugs and paraphernalia at the home.

The 42-year-old defendant has served as an Alameda County supervisor. She was also the president of the Santa Ana school board. The woman resigned from her supervisor position in April 2012 after displaying bizarre behavior. She has since blamed those incidents on drug dependency. The woman had, for instance, claimed that she was assaulted during a meeting with a former lover at a hotel. The man was never charged with a crime.

Prosecutors requested that the charges be dismissed. They conceded that the woman had completed an intensive drug-treatment program. That program involved in-patient treatment that was more substantial than a normal drug-court diversion program. Now, the woman lives with her husband in Long Beach. He withdrew divorce papers in March 2013 that he had filed in July 2010. The politician is pleased with the progress his wife made in treatment.

Not all defendants convicted of dug offenses are malicious. This woman received intensive treatment for her addiction. Similar services may be available through a drug diversion program. Criminal defense attorneys may be able to advise their clients about strategies that could possibly reduce charges and allow defendants to take advantage of such drug diversion programs. Defendants may benefit from consulting with a qualified California lawyer.
