Hockey coach facing child porn charges

A 54-year-old youth coach from Chula Vista is being forced to mount a criminal defense against allegations that he shared child pornography through the Internet. The man, who has been active in the community hockey league, is facing two formal charges of possessing and distributing materials that show a minor in sexual conduct. The man faces a five-year prison term in connection with the allegations, to which he has pleaded not guilty.

In addition, the man has been prohibited from having contact with any minors other than his own children. He is free on $75,000 bail, and he will be permitted to continue using electronic devices in the context of his professional duties. His computer and other devices will be subject to search at any time during his release, however, which constitutes a surrender of the man's Fourth Amendment rights.

Representatives from the hockey program say that the man passed three background checks in order to volunteer with the San Diego Saints Traveling Hockey Program. However, the man has been suspended from all activities at the volunteer center pending the outcome of the child pornography investigation. This is true even though the man is not suspected of perpetuating any violations against the children he coached through the youth hockey program.

News reports have not included information about the next hearing in this felony case.

Even though the man is accused of horrific crimes in connection with the pornography charges, he is entitled to certain rights. In this case, the man's defense attorney was able to argue for the defendant's use of a computer, which was threatened because of the charges. This is a great example of a defense attorney working to protect the rights of the client. American courts consider defendants innocent until proven guilty. As a result, this man should not be treated as a criminal before he is actually tried for the allegations.
